When we started urllo back in 2014, we were the very first enterprise-grade URL redirection service on the planet. In fact, we actually founded the company because when we went looking for a reliable URL redirection service, we couldn’t find one. So we built it and only looked forward.

We’ve since worked with everyone from massive international enterprises to startups and creative agencies along with every other kind of company that needs URL redirects. We purposefully create an ever-improving product so that you don’t need to find an alternative to urllo. In fact, we not-so-humbly submit that urllo is the world’s best URL redirection service no matter what your needs.

Common urllo Alternatives

While urllo is easy to use, trustworthy, reliable and fast, we completely understand that some users are still in the early stages, searching for a solution to their needs. Maybe you have the resources to build your own, or are shopping for the ideal solution. There are a number of options available if you want to go that route:

1. Build and manage the infrastructure yourself

Building it yourself is an understandable urllo alternative. This gives you full control over your website redirects and lets you fully customize the functionality to your needs.

The drawback to building it yourself is two fold – you need to pay for the initial development, and then you have an ongoing investment of time and team effort to manage this new product. This can be quite challenging for your IT department as it will require dedicated resources and a committed budget allocation. This is likely most suitable for large organizations with appropriately sized IT capacity and capability.

2. Use your domain registrar

You’re thinking, “wait, I already have a domain registrar and I’m sure they could do this for us”, and you’d be right. If you’re already actively using a domain registrar like GoDaddy or Namecheap, and already using their hosted DNS services, then you could definitely utilize their URL redirects add-on service and stick to one provider. Most domain registrars do provide this, or a similar offering.

Here’s the rub: these services are not typically as user-friendly or as comprehensive since they aren’t the core functionality provided by these service providers. You’re generally limited to one power user with no additional user access, and certainly won’t provide you with an informative, easy-to-use dashboard and detailed redirect analytics that help you make better decisions.

Still this might be a good option for a smaller business, but larger business will have bigger challenges and should probably consider a better option.

3. Use a DNS provider

You’re pretty savvy so you might already know some DNS providers (DNS Made Easy, DYN, etc.) can provide URL redirect services. Many don’t. It’s usually a good idea to check if you’re looking for an urllo alternative that doesn’t require new integration. Keep in mind that much like the domain registrar solutions, these DNS providers don’t do this as a mainstay and may provide this service outside of their core offerings.

Generally speaking, they’re top-tier DNS and DNS support providers, but lack a good interface that is designed to manage your redirects. None that we’ve come across provide SSL certificates (and we’ve checked). On top of that, if you wanted to add team members who will manage these redirects, you’d also be giving them access to your DNS – not really a best practice.

While better than the domain registrar option, it’s still a far reach from a full-service solution and you’d have to be pretty IT savvy to make it work for you. This limits how accessible and effective it is for multiple departments across a larger enterprise.

Make sure you fully understand what you’re getting and not getting when going this route.

4. Redirect services from a link shortener

There are also link shorteners that can offer URL redirect services that can handle higher traffic volumes. Their capability is what you’d expect when you consider their core business focus is only shortening links. Some of these providers can also manage SSL certificates as well. This makes them a better option than both the domain registrar and a DNS provider.

However, these link shorteners are not designed for large volumes of redirect configurations, and they don’t have effective dashboards that deliver the right information. Specifically, as these dashboards are built for link shortening, their services aren’t suitable for enterprise requirements or IT teams. This option isn’t bad and could work well for marketing teams if you are willing to work with a less than ideal redirect interface.

Much like the others above, this is a potential alternative, but not a perfect one. Ensure you understand and know what you’re NOT getting with these providers.

5. Work with a dedicated URL redirect service

Unlike domain registrars, DNS providers and link shorteners, a dedicated URL redirect service is optimized for one thing and one thing only. They are most comparable from a functionality, robustness and customization perspective to the build-it-yourself option. The biggest difference here is that a dedicated service, as the name implies, is pre-built, intentionally designed, and available on demand exclusively for the purpose of URL redirection. A trustworthy, reliable, and fast URL redirect service should be built to effectively service enterprise needs and teams. It should have a smooth and easy-to-use interface, with great customer service and support to back it up.
